Jethro Tull albums can be roughly sorted into the following categories.  A challenge, given the many styles of music on every album.

Blues / Jazz
This Was, Stand Up, Catfish Rising

Folk or Acoustic Rock
Stand Up, Aqualung, Minstrel In The Gallery, Songs From The Wood, Heavy Horses, Stormwatch, J-Tull Dot Com, The Jethro Tull Christmas Album

Prog / Art / "Concept" Rock
Aqualung, Thick As A Brick, A Passion Play, Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll: Too Young To Die!

Medium Rock
Benefit, Aqualung, Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll: Too Young To Die!, Crest Of A Knave, Rock Island, Catfish Rising

Elizabethan / Medieval / Classical
War Child, Minstrel In The Gallery

Electronic Keyboards / Synthesizers
A, Broadsword And The Beast, Under Wraps, Crest Of A Knave

Far East / Asian Influences
Roots To Branches, J-Tull Dot Com
There another notable combination.  In the late 70's, Tull released 3 albums that are often grouped together.  It's worth noting that these are the last to include John Evans on piano/organ, and are the final discs to feature the "classic" interplay between Anderson, Barre and Evans.  A trilogy that focuses on the past, the present, and the future:
Songs From The Wood, Heavy Horses, Stormwatch
